SUNNY'S UPDATE
I would like to extend a big THANK YOU to all of you who made numerous donations to help defray the cost of Sunny's corrective surgery and the kind notes inquiring about Sunny. I would also like to take a minute to give you an update on Sunny's recovery.
Sunny had the apparatus removed from his leg on September 22nd and had x-rays taken. Dr Devitt was not thoroughly satisfied with the rotation, so Sunny was put in a splint. On Thursday October 16th Sunny had more x-rays taken and at that time, Dr. Devitt determined that we had achieved the desired length (about 3 centimeters) and rotation in his left front paw, and that his chances for a complete recovery are very good!
The next few months, however, will be the hard part. Sunny has for the most part never used his left paw, so he must go through a lot of strenuous physical therapy to build up the muscles and regain mobility in the paw if he is to actively, and effectively use it again.
Sunny began his physical therapy on October 16th. He was able to go swimming and had the funniest look on his face when he realized his left leg really worked! It didn't just hang there anymore!! He goes to physical therapy at the Veterinary Referral Center of Colorado once a week and seems to be enjoying it. Our family cannot wait to take him camping and swimming next summer!!
Sunny seems to be enjoying his new, working leg and should be running around the local dog park very soon!
Thank you again for your concern and support. It has truly meant a great deal to our family. We will keep you informed on Sunny's progress.
